Business Area – Business Development Role: Business Development Manager, Strategic Advisory Location: London Reporting to: Senior Business Development Manager - Strategic Advisory Hours of work - Monday to Friday, 9:30 - 17:30, however you will be required to work such hours as are necessary to carry out your duties. Department/ Role Overview: We are looking for an accomplished, credible and passionate Business Development Manager (BDM) to harness the power of our network and consolidate client offering across the Strategic Advisory practice, specifically to the Contentious Financial Services, Competition and Intellectual Property teams. Working alongside the Firm's Marketing and Business Development function, the BDM will be expected to deliver targeted, appropriate, tailored and sophisticated business development activity in pursuit of the Strategic Advisory groups growth objectives. To this end the BDM will have demonstrable experience in leading the development of strategic business development initiatives, to include fee generation and brand building activities. Experience of working in a Disputes practice within a legal or other professional services environment will be a distinct advantage. The Strategic Advisory Group The Strategic Advisory team at Ashurst is a multi-product, multi-jurisdictional platform providing advice to leading organisations on complex contentious and non contentious issues that they are facing and are focused on delivering strategic innovative solutions to our clients' most complex business critical challenges.. We expect the BDM to proactively engage with all relevant partners in the firm to provide strategic high quality business development advice and ensure that our practice develops across all fronts. Main responsibilities: The BDMs primary responsibility will be to shape and deliver the entire BD and marketing mix: Business planning – work alongside Strategic Advisory partners and partners in other streams to ensure that business plans are focused and considered. Execution of agreed BD plans. Cross stream working – working with partners throughout the firm to co-ordinate our Strategic Advisory practice, ensure a holistic client experience and delivery high quality BD initiatives. Client targeting – take a thoughtful and dynamic approach to attracting new clients to the firm. Work closely with partners to support their efforts. Pitching - working closely with our central pitch team, develop engaging pitch material which is truly client centric and supporting partners in capitalising on opportunities. Client Relationship Management - although not a client facing role, the BDM will be expected to play an active role in the firm’s Client Relationship Management Programme, working closely with our Industry BD teams ensuring that potential opportunities for developing our client offering to the firm’s most significant clients are identified and progressed. Content and thought leadership – working with the expertise lawyers and fee-earner community and the communications, digital, design, PR and practice stream & industry BD teams, to shape and deliver engaging, insightful, targeted and thought-provoking content. Digital Communications – engaging with fee earners and our digital team to ensure that all digital platforms are fully utilised to communicate with our clients and other external stakeholders. International – to work with partners in the Strategic Advisory stream and wider practice to ensure that our engagement with clients is focused, thoughtful and targeted. Awards and submissions – support the Strategic Advisory group in ensuring that submissions for awards and directories represent the very best of the firm. Training – working with L&D to deliver BD training to support staff and fee earners. Conferences and strategic sponsorships – working closely with fee earns to evaluate sponsorship and profile raising opportunities. Be a committed, effective and responsible member of the BD team contributing to team projects and the wider development of Ashurst's BD approach. Risk and Control: Ensure that all activities and duties are carried out in full compliance with our regulatory requirements and internal policies. Essential skills and experience: Degree educated Substantial BD experience gained either in a B2B or professional services role Ability to manage lots of data and information and to look beyond the data and analyse it Ability and willingness to take the initiative and challenge status quo Proven ability to manage multiple deliverables within a tight timeframe and deliver high quality work Demonstrable confidence to develop strong working relationships with the partners, associates, PSLs and all members of the BD team Ability to build strong business relationships with internal and external clients and the resilience to deal with demanding individuals Ability to be proactive, entrepreneurial and push ahead Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, written, spoken and presentational Excellent attention to detail Pro-active approach to defining needs and delivering solutions Willingness to provide feedback, share information and contribute ideas and suggestions as necessary Demonstrable flexibility to deal confidently with changes in stream requirements Willingness to meet the demands of the role through extended hours when required Experience of working in a diverse team whilst fostering an inclusive team culture
