SP Engineering Services has been successful in securing regulatory funding under the Network Innovation Competition (NIC) and Network Innovation Allowance (NIA) mechanism, which is a new provision under the RIIO T1 and ED1 settlement.

Reporting to the Future Networks Manager and Project Steering Board where applicable, the Lead Engineer will provide a project management (including financial control), programme coordination and technical direction for the SP Energy Networks delivery team, liaising closely with internal stakeholders and external project partners.

Principally focusing on delivery of the assigned projects which has various delivery programme (from the Ofgem approval), the Lead Engineer will also facilitate further proposals of subsequent R&D projects under the NIC, NIA and Innovation Rollout Mechanism (IRM) regulatory frameworks.

A feature of NIA and NIC project funding is the requirement for knowledge dissemination and external stakeholder engagement. To this end, the role shall provide support to the other team members as well as our Stakeholder team. The post holder is mainly accountable for the delivery for flagship innovation projects. The post holder will play a key role in ensuring the effective and efficient operation of the Project Delivery team with appropriate input from specialists drawn from internal stakeholders and external partners.


Project Management

  • Plan, co-ordinate and supervise NIC projects activity including budgetary control, scheduling and logistical aspects:
  • Produce and maintain a programme of project activities using an appropriate project management tool
  • Identify risks and propose effective migration measures proactively
  • Make professional judgements and ensure timely delivery of reports to the Project Steering group and line manager(s) 
  • Supervision and support all procurement activity associated with the project work packages
  • Co-ordination with Suppliers on the specification, scheduling, delivery and acceptance of contracted products and services; ensure the customers interests (both current and future) and safety are protected in negotiations
  • Coordination of the installation of all substation and IT equipment associated with the project
  • Any other reasonable responsibilities/activities required to safeguard a satisfactory project delivery
  • Distribution System Operator, Data Analytics (IT), Marketing, Commercial Expertise 

  • In-depth understanding of regulated network business (electricity transmission networks preferred) and its engineering foundations
  • Accountable for the review and audit of all project deliverables within and beyond the Project directions, including specifications, commercial indications of engineering specifications, compliance with technical standards, data validation, modelling tools etc. with the input of technical specialists where appropriate
  • Primary point of contact for all technical matters relating to NIA/ NIC projects for both internal and external queries/actions
  • Draft, review and contribute to reports and papers in line with the NIA/NIC guidance, to facilitate effective knowledge sharing and inform the industrial standards
  • Work with the project delivery team to capture new learnings from the project to maximise the value of innovation into Business as Usual (BaU) and share with the key stakeholders in an efficient and timely manner
  • Stakeholder Engagement 

  • Liaising with the internal/external stakeholders, ensure that all relevant stakeholders are aware of the project and the associated implications, opportunities and responsibilities that apply to them
  • Assess and facilitate the implementation of enduring measures regarding the interactions of innovation projects with existing IT infrastructure, Real Time Systems (RTS), existing and new commercial framework and regulated interfaces TO/GBSO/DSO. This will include strategic and procedural aspects of grid monitoring, system planning & operation, investment and business model
  • Represent the team and the company in front of internal and external stakeholders, with awareness of internal reporting lines and security

    Skills and Requirements

  • Strong organisation and project management skills across cross functional work streams
  • Highly self-motivated and self-confident individual with a positive ‘can do’ attitude, capable of influencing and co-ordinating the action of peers and influencing discussions with competitors
  • Well-developed technical knowledge of electrical engineering principles; alternatively, have in-depth experience and understanding of the energy trading framework (such as DSO, TSO)
  • Technical understanding of all areas of system quality of supply and associated monitoring techniques (i.e. the interface of forecasting, real time energy trading, IT/communications infrastructure) 
  • Confident to lead/coordinate a team in a technology challenging project with complex interface and multiple stakeholders
  • Good interpersonal skills with good English written and oral communication skills
  • Project management tools 
  • Ability to influence and lobby both internal and external stakeholders to gain agreement and acceptance of solution and implementation approaches
  • To be successful in a role you will need to demonstrate as minimum:

  • Degree in a relevant technical subject or track records/ experiences
  • Strong negotiation and influencing skills to deliver effective relationship building at all levels
  • Professional conduct in a regulated environment, good team working and team building skills
  • Comfortable with a rapidly changing environment and conflicting priorities
  • Strong presentational and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to prioritise workloads and deliver to agreed timescales and quality standards
  • Proven track record in liaising with industry bodies
  • Professional behaviour, positive ‘can do’ attitude, flexibility and strong self-discipline 
  • A Full and valid UK driving licence

    This is a permanent contract. Salary for this role will be from £49,012 per annum.
