This post of Research Assistant (pre-doctoral) or Research Associate (post-doctoral) is to conduct world-leading research on argumentation-based deep interactive explanations for data-centric methods, under the direction of Prof Francesca Toni, within the ERC Advanced Project ADIX (Argumentation-based Deep Interactive eXplanations).
It will focus on building explanations for a variety of natural language processing tasks using argument mining to obtain argumentation frameworks from text, in such a way that humans can naturally interact with the resulting explainable AI solutions to understand and improve them.
You will be expected to interact with other researchers in ADIX and with external collaborators in medical and legal settings.
The post is based in the Department of Computing at Imperial College London. This is a leading department of Computer Science among UK Universities.
The department has achieved top results in each of the research assessment exercises undertaken by the Higher Education Funding Council for England.
You will join the CLArg research group, led by Prof Toni: this is a friendly, vibrant, multi-national team working on various aspects of argumentation-based XAI (for further information on the group and related projects, see: https://clarg.doc.ic.ac.uk).
Duties and responsibilities
The position offers an exciting opportunity for conducting internationally leading and impactful research in explainable AI.
You will be responsible for researching and delivering argumentation-based, interactive explainable AI solutions for a variety of natural language processing tasks, e.g. fact-checking or fake news detection, using various forms of argument mining, e.g. relation-based, to obtain argumentation frameworks from text such to support the original tasks, and will be expected to submit publications to top-tier conferences and journals in AI.
